Pan turns back to us and holds out a wad of the cheesy crud. “This stuff is what he’s been eating. It’s loaded with fortune-teller fungus.” Pan throws the gloppy slop into her bucket.

“This fungus has very unique properties.” Her eyes dart to the guards, then back to me. “It gives you visions. Hallucinations. Flashes of what your enemies intend to do in the future. Some elves call it by its street name, foe mold, which of course is a ludicrous misnomer because the stuff is not a mold at all but a true fungus—”

I grab her gently by the shoulders. “What are you trying to say?” I ask.

Pan holds up a wad of the stuff. “This,” she says, “this is how the goblin king knows what we’re going to do before we do it. He’s not a mind reader. He’s a foe mold addict.”

My head spins. I feel like this is critical information. But I don’t get a chance to figure out how it can help us.

Because at that moment, the ground begins to move.

We teeter as the earth itself shakes under our feet.

“What the heck?” Moxie yells. “Earthquake!”

The goblin guards look stricken. Some glance around the room desperately as if seeking instructions. And then, out of the corner of my eye, I see it.

The statue’s enormous foot … lifts off the ground.

I hear chanting behind me.

A red blast shoots from the mage’s wand and hits one of the floating gems. The gem pulsates with light and the beam that shoots at the statue intensifies.
